boat for websiteWiltshire Police Commissioner visits the Coastal Camp

The Police & Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon, Mr Angus Macpherson, visited our recent Coastal Camp on Brownsea Island and had a great day meeting the young people, volunteers and staff.

Angus watched the young people kayaking and windsurfing and even got his feet wet as he went out on a boat to observe the young people rising to the challenge of sailing boats in teams of two!

The Police and Crime Commission Innovation Fund gave us a grant of £34,000 to develop our Programme by funding the recruitment and salary costs of our new Volunteer Manager, Jon Rich. This new post means we can meet the volunteers’ needs more effectively and help them to deliver improved care and mentorship to the young people. It has also enabled Tessa, our Operations Director, to dedicate more time to the young people, their needs and development.

Our volunteers and staff are the positive role models the children look up to and learn from and we are very grateful for the support of Angus Macpherson and the Innovation Fund – the changes we have been able to make to the Youth Adventure Trust because of their funding has been invaluable.

“If people ever ask me why I volunteer I tell them of children covered in mud with beaming faces who have just overcome a huge challenge. You remember the look of achievement on their faces. And you know it’s about much more than just climbing a rock face or gong caving, it’s about building their confidence and self-esteem so that they are better equipped to deal with life in the future. And how can you put a value on that?” (Volunteer)
